Introducing: Squares That Care
Welcome everybody to Squares That Care! This is a little idea I've had for awhile now, and in the back of my mind always told myself I would start, but it wasn't until recently I decided to really buckle down and get serious about it. This idea isn't new or original, but it's something I've wanted to do, something I feel like I CAN do and most of all, something I feel passionate about.
Here's the basic concept of Squares That Care: A collection of 6"x6" granny squares donated from anyone and everyone who would like to volunteer, sent to me where I will assemble them together into an afghan and then put them up for either auction or to be raffled off. The proceeds from each afghan will then be donated to a charity. Ultimately this project will result in not only raising money to benefit charities but to practice and encourage our creativity and skills.
I know what you're thinking: wouldn't it be easier just to donate money without the afghans? Yes and no. Yes, it would be easier just to write a check to a charity and send it off and be done with it. But for one: I wouldn't be able to donate nearly as much by myself as I could raffling off something of worth, two: I feel that God is putting it on my heart to not have idle hands, to use my skills and talents to help others and I felt like this was a great way to practice that, thirdly: it's an excellent way to improve my crocheting and knitting, to practice creativity, and to share this within a community of others who want to do the same.
Of course this is still in it's infancy stages, and we'll have to just sort of play everything by ear, but I couldn't be more excited. I'll be accepting granny squares of any color or pattern, knit or crocheted, as long as it measures 6"x6" with straight edges so I can join them and preferably acrylic yarn. Any skill level is welcomed to participate! Don't feel intimidated if you're still learning, everyone is more than welcome to join! The more the merrier! I'll be accepting any kind of granny squares as ongoing donations, but I always thought it would be fun to have little "challenges" where you can send in themed granny squares to exercise your creativity. And the best part? At the end, one person will win a beautiful blanket made from different people from all different parts of the world! How amazing, right?
If you'd like to join, I'd love to have you! You can send your squares to:
